Congressman Gary Ackerman

Congressman Gary Ackerman recently retired after serving for thirty years as a member of the United States House of Representatives where he was one of India’s staunchest allies. Congressman Ackerman was a member of the India Caucus in the Congress and authored the US India nuclear regulation. As the former chairman of the House Foreign Relation Subcommittee in the Middle East and South Asia, he was regularly consulted by Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama on Indo-US relations.

While a member of Congress, he was a frequent visitor to India. For all of his efforts, Congressman Ackerman was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2002.
